La Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) fue fundada en 1925 y es la fundación política más antigua de Alemania. Su creación forma parte del legado político de Friedrich Ebert, el primer presidente electo democráticamente en Alemania.
Es una organización política se rige por los valores fundamentales de la democracia social: libertad, justicia y solidaridad. Con ese marco su actividad se basa en la generación de espacios de diálogo y debate político, capacitación, colaboración internacional, análisis y asesoría política dirigidos a los actores políticos y sociales en cada país.
Como institución sin fines de lucro, la Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung trabaja en manera independiente y autónoma. Tiene sedes en Bonn y Berlín y cuenta, además, con 17 academias y oficinas en los Estados Federados de la República Federal de Alemania. Cuenta con un presupuesto anual que proviene casi enteramente de fondos público
La FES tiene unos 530 colaboradores en Alemania, otros 90 representantes alemanes en el exterior y más de 500 colaboradores locales en sus oficinas en más de 100 países del mundo.

Friedrich Ebert ejerció el cargo de primer Presidente de la República de Weimar entre 1919 y 1925. Luchó en favor de la democracia parlamentaria, se consideraba presidente de todos los alemanes y realizó una política orientada al equilibrio social. En su testamento, especificó que lo recaudado de las donaciones en su funeral debería ser usado para crear una fundación.
